About

About the blog: This space is a creative (and sometimes overly-verbal) outlet for what’s going on in my kitchen. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch for any questions or recipe requests. Go ahead and email townbakes@gmail.com . If you’d like to take a look at how Town Bakes came to be, mosey on over to Hawk & Pigeon for a bit of history.

About the baker: Welcome to all you new readers! I’m Laura, a baker, a wordsmith, and a book artist who fell head-over-heels for pie and all its pastry/flaky goodness several years ago. Once I began the practice of Pie-Sundays (or Saturdays), coercing my friends to come over to our apartment and try my latest creation, it was pretty much a snowball effect from there. I’m inexplicably in love with pie dough, making lattice, and assembling dreamy combinations of fruit and the butteriest, most tender crust.

Baking makes me happy, and that is simply and plainly my mission: to share the baked goods that bring joy to my life with the hope that they bring joy to you, too. My pies, cookies, bundt cakes, and pastry creations are all handmade in Oakland, CA, with a keen attention to the abundance of the season.

I can also be found wading around the edges of fine arts — when I’m not baking, I’m making linoleum block prints, sewing up books, or drawing weird geometric abstractions. Those items can be found for sale here. I’ve lived in Oakland for over 11 years and am happy to pass on any thoughts, tips, and suggestions, about why this city rocks and where you should go to eat, dream, walk, run, or imbibe beers. There’s a-plenty.

Yours,
Town Bakes
